U.S. President Donald Trump, the first sitting president to be present at an NBA Finals game, received a hostile reception from New York Knicks supporters on Monday night at Madison Square Garden before Game 3 against the San Antonio Spurs.
While the jumbotron highlighted the American flag during the national anthem, Trump was met with a chorus of boos. He later described the response as “loud and enthusiastic,” and said the event was “amazing,” despite the team’s 115‑111 loss, which narrowed the Knicks’ series advantage to 2‑1.
Trump, 79, a New Yorker, sat in a specially constructed suite near midcourt that featured bullet‑proof glass among other security measures. He was among a select group of guests invited by Knicks owner James Dolan and arrived after a security‑heavy motorcade that faced aggressive gestures from some fans holding signs that read “Trump must go.”
NBA commissioner Adam Silver welcomed Trump to the first NBA Finals appearance in New York since 1999, noting his support for the league. “What makes sports special, especially when there are so many divisions, is that it brings people together,” Silver said on ESPN’s “Inside the NBA” ahead of Game 3.
Security protocols included multiple checkpoints for fans, media and staff, with police and Secret Service personnel securing the arena. Silver acknowledged the inconvenience but emphasized the necessity of the precautions.
Both team coaches addressed the President’s presence, insisting it would not distract the players. Knicks coach Mike Brown stated, “My focus is what’s next, and Game 3 is front of us.”
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani also attended, purchasing a standing‑room‑only ticket for roughly $1,000.
