Producer Reveals Catherine Zeta-Jones’ Breakthrough Role Stemmed from Chance Encounter

Producer Pip Burley has disclosed that Catherine Zeta-Jones’ career-defining role in The Darling Buds of May resulted from “pure good fortune” after a serendipitous meeting during casting sessions for the 1990s ITV comedy-drama.

Burley recalled encountering the future Hollywood star in the reception area of his final audition day. He noticed what he described as “a beautiful girl in a yellow dress” and invited her to read for the part of Mariette, even though Jones had only been in the building for a separate light entertainment programme.

“She was a lovely girl, and very smart,” Burley said, reflecting on the impromptu audition that launched her television career.

The producer also revealed that Danny DeVito had once been considered for the role of Pop Larkin, among other surprising casting possibilities that were explored during development.

Burley, who composed the series’ theme music, explained he had first been struck by the Swansea-born performer while watching her as a second understudy in the musical 42nd Street. “We were struck with her,” he told BBC Radio Wales, describing the impression that ultimately led to her breakthrough casting.
