Fans Gather as Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Prepare for Intimate Madison Square Garden Wedding Ceremony

NEW YORK — Fans gathered outside Madison Square Garden on Friday in anticipation of what could be one of the most anticipated weddings of the year, as Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce prepare to exchange vows at the New York venue.

Details obtained by The Associated Press through a city permit reveal preparations for a “special event at MSG” scheduled to begin Friday evening and continue until 4 a.m. Saturday. The revelation comes after the couple spent months keeping wedding details under wraps since announcing their engagement in August 2025.

As speculation intensified, fans began gathering in front of the stadium ahead of the expected ceremony. Despite the couple’s efforts to maintain secrecy, dozens of elegantly dressed guests arrived at the venue in a convoy of black cars throughout the day.

Among those waiting was Lisa Benham from England, who told NPR she and her daughter have been devoted Swift fans for years. “I’ve always listened to her music,” said Benham, 47. “My daughter got me into her shows, and I’ve followed every detail of her relationship with Travis.”

“I’m thrilled for them,” Benham added. “I love their story and I’m so pleased for them.”

Swift, 36, has maintained a measured approach to sharing personal details despite her global platform and history of revealing intimate aspects of her life through music. In October 2025, she told the U.K.’s Heart Radio that she never envisioned planning elaborate weddings, telling hosts: “You would think that I had been the type of person who would have obsessed over the idea of a wedding my whole life, but I actually never thought about what I would ever do or what I would want until I met the person.”

After meeting during the summer of 2023, the couple has largely avoided public appearances together, fueling months of speculation about their wedding plans. All signs eventually pointed to Madison Square Garden for a Fourth of July weekend celebration.

Swift’s meticulously crafted clues—consistent with her reputation for embedding Easter eggs in her work—appeared to confirm the venue speculation. Fans successfully decoded her hints, ending days of uncertainty about whether the preparations were genuine or simply another of her strategic reveals.

A recap of their romance

The couple began dating in the summer of 2023 during Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour. Travis Kelce discussed their initial connection on his podcast New Heights, revealing he had attempted to meet Swift after one of her New York shows.

“I was a little butt-hurt I didn’t get to hand her one of the friendship bracelets I made for her,” Kelce said. “I wanted to give Taylor Swift one with my number on it.”

Swift later described the gesture as “metal as hell” in an interview with Time magazine. Within months, she was regularly attending his games, including the 2024 Super Bowl, where the Kansas City Chiefs secured victory. He also appeared at numerous concerts throughout her 2024 tour.

The couple’s relationship deepened through mutual respect for their craft, with Swift appearing on New Heights in August 2025 to announce her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, which she noted was heavily influenced by their partnership. She described their connection, explaining that both “entertain people for three-plus hours in NFL stadiums.”

Less than two weeks after their public engagement announcement—featuring photos of a flower-filled backyard proposal and a substantial diamond ring—Swift humorously told The Graham Norton Show that she intended to invite “anyone I’ve ever talked to” to the wedding.

Sleuths had been eyeing Madison Square Garden

Suspicion around a July 3rd wedding at MSG intensified throughout June. Initial reports suggested Swift might marry at her coastal Rhode Island estate, but those rumors proved unfounded. Meanwhile, public records revealed a different story.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani appeared to confirm speculation while discussing the upcoming heat wave in June. “We are used to big events, and we are incredibly excited for this one,” Mamdani said. “We know it coincides with the Knicks Finals run. We know it coincides with July Fourth, America 250, Taylor Swift’s wedding all happening at the same time.”

Further evidence emerged when The New York Times reported that an event company had secured permits for a gathering of up to 1,000 people at Madison Square Garden on July 3rd, along with a smaller pre-wedding event on July 2nd. City officials later confirmed street closure plans to Reuters.

Visual confirmation appeared when CBS News shared footage of trucks unloading “garden party” themed equipment outside the venue earlier in the week. MSG’s online event calendar also showed suspicious gaps, registering no bookings until July 7th.

Mayor Mamdani further fueled speculation during a Tuesday press conference about the approaching heat wave. “My recommendation to all New Yorkers is to stay inside and stay cool, and if you happen to be getting married at Madison Square Garden you will be staying inside and staying cool, and I think it’s a good example to set for the city at large,” he said with a noticeable smile.

The venue has historical precedent for historic celebrations: Sly Stone married actress Kathy Silva at MSG in 1974, performing as their wedding band played before an audience of nearly 23,000 guests.

Why New York, and why now?

Madison Square Garden’s 19,000-plus capacity might initially seem incongruous with Swift’s preference for privacy. However, security experts and event planners cite practical advantages for the heavily guarded venue.

“It’s sort of this locked box where paparazzi can’t get inside,” explained Emma Fitzsimmons, a New York Times reporter covering the wedding. “There’s not going to be helicopters overhead. She can release photos of the event and her dress, which we’re all very curious to see, on her own terms.”

Swift maintains a strong connection to New York, having made it her home base since building her Tribeca compound. Her 2014 hit Welcome To New York celebrated her relocation to the city, and she has a well-documented tradition of celebrating Independence Day weekend in Rhode Island, often sharing holiday photos on social media.

Swifties noted that Swift and Kelce began their relationship shortly after the July 4th holiday in 2023, when she celebrated with close friends and documented the occasion on Instagram with the caption: “Happy belated Independence Day from your local neighborhood independent girlies. See you tonight Kansas Cityyy.”
