Amid ongoing protests across France and the upcoming NFL contest between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints in Paris, Ligue 1 officials moved the match between Paris Saint‑Germain and Lyon from Sunday to Monday night.
Local police requested the change, citing security concerns and the need to allocate limited resources during the weekend unrest. Officers have been managing disturbances linked to previous high‑profile PSG games, and the two clubs currently sit level at the top of the league table.
Ligue 1 confirmed the police request in an official statement, validating the decision to shift the fixture.
The Monday scheduling now conflicts with the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, potentially preventing nominated PSG players from attending.
Demonstrations have been sweeping France as citizens protest rising living costs and highlight poor school conditions and teacher shortages. Organizers estimate that as many as 800,000 people participated in last weekend’s rallies.
The Steelers and Saints are set to play the NFL’s first game in France, and the league maintains that the event will proceed despite the protests. “Preparations continue as scheduled for NFL events and the game at Stade de France next Sunday,” the NFL said in a statement. “We continue to work closely with local authorities and partners on all operational and security matters. We are also providing the two clubs with regular updates. There’s been no disruption or impact at league sites.”
Stade de France, located in Saint‑Denis just north of Paris, will host the NFL game, while PSG plays its home matches at Parc des Princes in the southwest part of the city, near landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower.
