Karachi: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) opened Wednesday’s session in positive territory, but early gains quickly faded as escalating tensions between the United States and Iran sparked market volatility. The KSE‑100 benchmark swung sharply during the day, reaching an intraday high of 173,174.18 before slipping to 172,250.20. By 12:49 p.m. local time, the index had recovered to 172,824.51, gaining 182.35 points (0.11%).

Trading activity remained moderate, with 72.42 million shares changing hands for a total value of Rs5.75 billion.

Meanwhile, workers’ remittances provided a bright spot, reaching $3.7 billion in August 2026. Inflows rose 16.5% year‑on‑year and 0.7% month‑on‑month, underscoring continued strength in overseas transfers.

Regional and global equities faced pressure as heightened geopolitical risk prompted investors to reassess potential impacts on energy prices and economic stability. The latest flare‑up in the Middle East, marked by increased attacks on military, shipping and energy assets from both the U.S. and Iran, has ended a month of relative calm.

Rising oil prices and concerns over possible supply disruptions added to the uncertainty, influencing market sentiment across the region.
