Rising inflation has driven food costs higher, creating financial pressure for U.S. steakhouses across the price spectrum, prompting several well‑known establishments to close permanently or seek bankruptcy protection.
Beef price surges pushed steak costs up 16% in March 2026 to $12.73 per pound, according to Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis data, leading to higher menu prices and reduced diner traffic, which hurt restaurant revenue.
In the past three months, Steakhouses such as Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar, McCormick & Schmick’s, and Stoney River Steakhouse and Grill have shuttered locations, and Quaker Steak & Lube is poised to close another.
Nevertheless, Conroe Corral Murphy LLC, a Golden Corral franchisee, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Texas on June 8 and remains operational.
Bloomin’ Brands, the parent company of Outback Steakhouse, announced the closure of 21 restaurants in 2025 and plans to shutter an additional 22 locations in 2026 as leases expire, per its third‑quarter earnings call.
Quaker Steak & Lube Announces Closure of Its Final Florida Restaurant
The final Quaker Steak & Lube restaurant in Florida, situated in Clearwater, will close permanently on July 5, according to General Manager Hillary Smith, who announced the decision on Facebook.
“After nearly 23 years of service, Quaker Steak & Lube will close its doors on July 5,” Smith, who has been employed at the venue since 2009, stated.
Neither Smith nor Quaker Steak & Lube provided a reason for the closure, which first opened in 2003, and Smith noted she began working there in August 2009.
Opened in a former gas station
Quaker Steak & Lube was founded in 1974 in an abandoned gas station in Sharon, Pennsylvania, as a muscle‑car‑themed, do‑it‑yourself steakhouse.
The Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania‑based chain, nicknamed “The Lube,” decorates its venues with gas‑station memorabilia, classic automobiles, and motorcycles, and offers steaks, chicken wings, baby‑back ribs, burgers, sandwiches, soups, and salads.
Quaker Steak & Lube has earned hundreds of national and international accolades for its cuisine and for its extensive selection of more than 20 wing sauces.
Chain has shuttered many locations
The operator filed for bankruptcy in November 2015 and, following the Chapter 11 proceedings, sold its 50 restaurants to TravelCenters of America in March 2016 for $25 million, according to FSR.
Since then, the chain has shrunk from 50 locations in 2016 to 26 stores, with the Clearwater closure reducing the count further.
TravelCenters reduced the chain to 42 locations by April 2021 before selling it to JDK Management Company, a hospitality brand owner and Quaker Steak franchisee, for $5 million.
“We’re growing again!” JDK Management announced in a LinkedIn post after the acquisition, noting that the purchase expands its award‑winning hospitality portfolio.
The post extended a “tremendous thank you” to its team members for their hard work and dedication.
Following the 2021 acquisition, JDK assumed the role of franchisor and became the owner of 21 Quaker Steak & Lube locations.
“JDK plans to maximize the brand’s potential through a vision focused on stability, respect for QSL heritage, and expansion to secure its future,” said Russ Berner, Vice President of Restaurant Operations, at the time of the sale.
JDK owns Perkins Restaurant franchises
JDK operates as a franchisee for more than 30 Perkins Restaurants across the Northeast and owns four hotel properties in Pennsylvania: Hampton Inn and Microtel Inn in Mansfield, and Fairfield Inn & Suites and Holiday Inn Express in Bloomsburg.
The Quaker Steak & Lube chain currently comprises 27 restaurants across eight U.S. states.
Fleming’s closed a Houston restaurant on April 18 after 25 years of operation, without providing a reason.
McCormick & Schmick’s shut its Pittsburgh site on May 26 after 18 years, and Stoney River Steakhouse and Grill announced a Towson, Maryland, closure on June 26; neither cited a specific cause.
Industry analysts attribute rising labor costs to higher menu prices that are deterring diners.
“High-wage states and markets are among the most challenging in the restaurant industry,” Michael J. Ingram, vice president and principal at National Franchise Sales, told TheStreet’s Kirk O’Neil via email.
Franchisees can only increase menu prices to a limited extent to offset rising expenses, yet losing customers makes it increasingly difficult to service existing debt and manage higher costs, Ingram noted.
