Queensberry Skips Purse Bid, Forces Denzel Bentley to Defend Title Abroad Against Hernandez

Denzel Bentley holds the WBO middleweight title, yet his promoter made no effort to keep the mandatory defense at home. Queensberry did not bid on Tuesday. Warriors Boxing won the right to stage Bentley’s fight with Yoenli Hernandez at the $200,000 minimum, leaving the champion facing a proposed U.S. date and a gross purse of $150,000 or $160,000.

Boxing journalist Jake Donovan reported that Warriors was the sole bidder. They proposed December 12 or 19 in Phoenix, Orlando, or Las Vegas. The date and venue remain unconfirmed, but the bid puts Hernandez’s promoter in charge of staging Bentley’s first defense as full champion.

Bentley’s share is $150,000 on a 75/25 split, or $160,000 if the WBO applies an 80/20 split based on the challenger’s country of residence. These figures are before deductions and expenses. Queensberry had the opportunity to bid for a British show and passed. Now Bentley faces the prospect of crossing the Atlantic to risk his title for a purse set at the division’s minimum bid.

That is a poor position for a champion. It also raises a fair question for Queensberry: if keeping Bentley at home mattered, why leave Warriors as the only bidder?

The decision does not reveal Warren’s private assessment of the fight. Its practical effect is clear. Bentley has lost the home advantage his own promoter had a chance to pursue. Bentley was elevated to full champion after Janibek Alimkhanuly moved up in weight. He had earned the interim belt, but this mandatory offers his first opportunity to defend the full title.

Hernandez is a serious assignment, though his August majority decision over Francisco Veron showed a competitive fight rather than an untouchable challenger.

A fight with Conor Benn promises more attention and likely more money. Bentley has also pursued a unification with Aaron McKenna. The WBO ordered Hernandez first, so keeping the belt means dealing with that obligation.

Warriors still has to put on the event, and Bentley’s camp has yet to announce its response. Queensberry’s empty seat at the purse bid has made the choice stark: take a financially unappealing defense on the challenger’s terms, or consider a future without the WBO title.
