New Zealand’s familiar swing-friendly conditions present Auqib Nabi with an ideal chance to make a lasting impact in India’s upcoming ODI series. The Jammu and Kashmir pacer, still establishing himself on the international stage, has earned the backing of former India batter Ajinkya Rahane, who is convinced the conditions throughout the series could favour the young bowler.
India’s five-match ODI series against New Zealand commences on November 4, with the visitors aiming to strengthen their bowling combinations ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Nabi’s selection becomes particularly significant following Prasidh Krishna’s ruled-out status due to a left hamstring injury.
Rahane views this as a valuable opportunity for Nabi to showcase his skills, especially with the ball expected to move in New Zealand conditions. Speaking on SonyLIV, the former India captain acknowledged Krishna’s absence but felt Nabi could thrive given the circumstances.
Why New Zealand Conditions Suit Auqib Nabi
Rahane highlighted that swing and seam movement are available in New Zealand, making it a potentially favourable environment for bowlers who maintain disciplined lines and lengths. He noted Nabi’s ability to consistently hit the right areas.
“We get to see swing and seam movement in New Zealand, and Auqib Nabi is a seam bowler who bowls consistently in good areas,” Rahane added.
Nabi’s international debut against the West Indies in Guwahati proved challenging, as he conceded 84 runs in 8.5 overs without taking a wicket. However, his subsequent outing for India A against New Zealand A showed promising signs, with six wickets taken across two innings in the four-day encounter at Lincoln.
Initially selected for the fourth and fifth ODIs, Nabi was subsequently added to the squad for the opening three matches following Krishna’s injury.
Rahane also identified Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Gurnoor Brar and Anshul Kamboj as key India pace options, suggesting the series offers an important chance for the entire bowling group to make an impact.
India enters the ODI series after winning the five-match T20I series 3-2 under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy. Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have joined the squad for the upcoming 50-over assignment.
