Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) endured a difficult start to IPL 2026, hampered by injuries and the loss of Mustafizur Rahman despite being the league’s biggest spenders at the 2025 auction. The team slipped to six consecutive defeats, but captain Ajinkya Rahane provided steady leadership, drawing on his experience of rescuing a Test side in Australia under similar adversity.
Heading into the final league match against Delhi Capitals, KKR chose not to follow real‑time updates from the Wankhede Stadium, where Rajasthan Royals were playing Mumbai Indians. The team only learned of Rajasthan’s victory – and KKR’s consequent elimination – after Delhi’s innings concluded, with KKR set a target of 2,024 runs. KKR were eventually bowled out for 163, finishing seventh on the points table.
Rahane acknowledged the season’s challenges from the outset, recalling his pre‑season press conference where he described 2026 as a “season of opportunities.” He highlighted two emerging players who maximised those chances: fast‑bowler Kartik Tyagi, who claimed 18 wickets – the third‑highest tally among Indian bowlers in the league stage – and all‑rounder Anukul Roy, who took nine wickets in 12 matches and remained unbeaten in two successful chases.
“When we sat down at the start of the season, I saw a great role for Anukul. He had a fantastic Syed Mushtaq Ali performance, and confidence from the domestic league carried through,” Rahane said. “Kartik was clear about his objectives from the practice sessions we held. As long as a bowler knows what he wants for the team, that clarity matters.”
Both players, Rahane believes, are only beginning their journeys and have the potential to reach the highest levels of the game.
When asked if he considered stepping down to reset the side, Rahane cited the importance of character and fan support. “Cricketers are shaped by our fans. They applaud our successes and critique our failures. I have always approached the game with the right attitude, and I never step down when the team struggles. Character is essential.”
He added, “Pressure is natural for the privileged. After a string of losses, it’s easy to dwell on past and future, but staying in the moment is key. One win can change everything; belief and consistency are vital.”
Rahane noted that the long break before KKR’s first win against Rajasthan Royals helped the side regroup.
Looking ahead to IPL 2027, Rahane said it was too early to speculate, opting instead to commend his squad’s resilience. “Few teams experience the kind of comeback we managed from game seven onward. I’m proud of the boys and how they handled themselves, even though missing the playoffs is disappointing.”
