Raiders Name Kirk Cousins Starting Quarterback for Season Opener vs. Miami

In Henderson, Nevada, the Raiders announced that Kirk Cousins will start as their quarterback for the season opener at home on September 13 against the Miami Dolphins, according to head coach Klint Kubiak.

During preseason, Cousins operated primarily with the first‑team offense, while rookie and top overall draft selection Fernando Mendoza spent most of his time with the second unit.

The Raiders retain three quarterbacks, with Aidan O’Connell entering his fourth season.

Kubiak said, “I’m delighted with all three of our quarterbacks; Kirk has had an outstanding offseason and a strong training camp, earning the starting role.”

The Raiders signed Cousins to a two‑year contract that guarantees $20 million, and the Falcons will cover $8.7 million of his salary this season.

Acquiring Cousins provides a gradual transition for Mendoza, allowing the rookie to develop without immediate pressure to lead the offense. Though Cousins will serve as a mentor, his familiarity with Kubiak’s system positions him to translate the positive momentum of training camp into the regular season.

Cousins holds an 88‑77‑2 win‑loss record as a starter with Washington, Minnesota and Atlanta, and his most notable achievement was guiding the Vikings to a 13‑4 record in 2022.

Kubiak noted, “Film study reveals consistent elements in his game. The areas where he has improved are his leadership and command.”

While the announcement was anticipated, it remains uncertain when, or if, Mendoza will see playing time this season. The Heisman Trophy winner, who also guided Indiana to a national championship, has displayed moments of the talent that earned him the top draft pick, though his inconsistency reflects his lack of NFL regular‑season experience.

The primary challenge will be ensuring Mendoza receives adequate preparation for when he is called upon, which may be difficult given that Cousins will continue to receive first‑team repetitions as the team enters the regular season.

Kubiak explained, “Any player not starting the opening game will assist on the scout team, and we are committed to finding every advantage to develop both him and his teammates further.”

When questioned about Mendoza’s participation this season, Kubiak responded succinctly, “We’ll focus on Miami first.”

Ashton Jeanty Could Suit Up for Opener

Running back Ashton Jeanty, who sustained an injury during practice on August 23, may be prepared for the season opener.

When asked about his optimism regarding Jeanty’s availability for the game against the Dolphins, a smiling Kubiak replied, “Yes.”

Rookie Defensive End Out for the Season

Defensive end Keyron Crawford, a third‑round pick this year, is sidelined for the remainder of the season due to an Achilles injury. He had risen into the rotation and was expected to receive substantial playing time.

Kubiak remarked, “He has made significant progress; he is a dedicated worker with a bright future, and he will continue to develop even during rehab. I am eager for his return to health for next season.”
