Raj Dhesi makes his feature film debut in Strong Son, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 11. He opened up about his decision to transition from professional wrestling to acting, noting that the former Jinder Mahal co‑star plays a supporting role in director Ian Bawa’s work.

During an interview with Popternative, Dhesi recounted memories that shaped his career path. “Bro, I’m inspired. I’m actually inspired. So, the first time I even heard about TIFF was in 2011. WWE had a show during TIFF. And in those days — this is pre‑Rockstar days, pre‑3MB days — I went out and partied, and like every place was bumping. And I asked, ‘What’s going on?’ They’re like, ‘It’s TIFF, it’s a film festival.’

Reflecting on his cross‑disciplinary journey, he discussed the practical advantages of his wrestling background. “Being flexible on set,” he noted, “was heavily influenced by Ian Bawa. In this film I deliver a monologue about pro wrestling — both as a wrestler and as a character — and the creative freedom allowed me significant wiggle room beyond the initial script. My training prepared me to improvise and adapt quickly under pressure.”

He emphasized the importance of nuanced acting styles compared to the performative nature of wrestling performances. “WWE acting is over‑the‑top; it feels like performing before thousands in a massive arena. By contrast, acting on film or television demands subtlety and precision. It’s thankful that I began acting lessons within my WWE career to bridge this gap.”

Looking ahead, Dhesi aims to spark wider conversations around masculinity and emotional vulnerability. “Men often cling to a façade of toughness, insisting on appearing hard. I encourage openness—being vulnerable, leaning on others, and seeking support such as therapy—to promote true mental health.”
