One of Vincent van Gogh’s paintings, unseen by the public for over six decades, has attracted throngs of viewers in Hong Kong ahead of its highly anticipated auction in New York this weekend.
The artist completed Châtaigniers en fleurs (Chestnut Trees in Blossom) in the French village of Auvers-sur-Oise roughly two months before his death in 1890.
Sotheby’s has placed a pre-sale estimate of $180 million on the work, a figure that would establish a new auction record for a Van Gogh artwork.
