Sharjah, Oct 30: Afghanistan’s premier leg-spinner Rashid Khan has etched his name into the record books, becoming the first bowler to claim 200 wickets in men’s T20 Internationals. The milestone arrived during the second T20I against Zimbabwe at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Thursday, when Rashid dismissed wicketkeeper-batter Tadiwanashe Marumani for two runs as Zimbabwe chased a imposing target of 222.

The achievement also elevates Rashid to the summit of the all-time T20I wicket-takers list. Having debuted against Zimbabwe in October 2015, he ascended to the top of the standings in September 2025, surpassing New Zealand’s Tim Southee during a tri-series match against the UAE in Sharjah.

Rashid’s landmark moment capped a memorable evening for Afghanistan, who recovered from a disastrous start to post 221 for seven.

Omarzai’s Sensational Century Powers Afghanistan Recovery

Afghanistan were reeling at five for four before Azmatullah Omarzai produced a stunning counter-attack, smashing 116 off just 50 deliveries. His innings featured five fours and 12 towering sixes, single-handedly rescuing the innings from collapse.

Omarzai found an able accomplice in Ijaz Ahmad Ahmadzai, with the pair stitching a remarkable 142-run stand for the sixth wicket in only 59 balls. Ijaz contributed a blistering 52 off 27 balls in a supporting role. Rashid then provided the finishing flourish with an unbeaten 25 off six balls, propelling Afghanistan to a formidable total. Brad Evans and Kundai Matigimu claimed two wickets apiece for Zimbabwe.

In reply, Zimbabwe mounted a spirited pursuit led by captain Sikandar Raza, who registered his second T20I century. Despite his heroics, the visitors fell 19 runs short. The contest ended on a warm note, with Rashid and Raza sharing an embrace that reflected their close friendship, renewed during a pre-match catch-up.

Zimbabwe’s revamped opening pair of Brian Bennett and Takudzwanashe Kaia provided a steady foundation, while debutant Tafadzwa Tsiga offered support to Raza. However, Ryan Burl’s early departure disrupted their momentum.

With this victory, Afghanistan extended their dominance over Zimbabwe, securing an eighth consecutive T20I series triumph against the African side.
