Shoppers in multiple states are being advised to inspect their refrigerators following a recall of raw cheddar cheese that may be contaminated with harmful strains of E. coli.

Family Farmstead Dairy, a Worcester, New York-based company, has issued a recall of its Family Farmstead Dairy Raw Mild Cheddar Cheese, which carries a best-by date of July 22, 2027, as announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on October 15.

The affected product was distributed to retailers across New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia, and Massachusetts, with the potential for further distribution through secondary channels. (iStock)

The recall was triggered after testing in Maryland identified two strains of E. coli—O26:H11 and O45:H2—in samples of the 8-ounce packaged cheese. As of the announcement, no illnesses or allergic reactions have been linked to the recalled product.

While most healthy adults typically recover from E. coli infections within a week, certain individuals—particularly young children and the elderly—are at risk for Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a severe complication that can result in kidney failure, permanent kidney damage, or death, according to the FDA notice.

At the time of publication, Family Farmstead Dairy had not responded to requests for additional comment from media outlets.
