Raye has been awarded the 2026 Mercury Prize for her second studio album This Music May Contain Hope, triumphing over a distinguished shortlist that included Sir Paul McCartney, Olivia Dean, Florence and the Machine, Jade, and Nia Archives. This marks Raye’s first victory in the prestigious British music competition, following her 2023 album My 21st Century Blues, which previously reached the final stages but lost to Ezra Collective.

During the ceremony in Newcastle, Raye accepted the award with heartfelt remarks, emphasizing the critical importance of albums in an industry often dominated by singles. Reflecting on her journey from prioritizing chart success to artistic depth, she expressed gratitude for the recognition. “Hope is something we all need,” she noted, acknowledging the British tendency to shy away from overt sentiment, yet underscoring its essential role in music.

The evening featured performances from several nominees, including Raye’s rendition of “I Hate The Way I Look Today” with a full big band, alongside Jade’s electrifying take on “Angel of My Dreams,” Olivia Dean’s soulful “Let Alone The One You Love,” and Florence and the Machine’s powerful reinterpretation of “One Of the Greats.” Pulp also delighted the audience with a performance of “Begging for Change” from the War Child Records compilation Help (2), supporting children affected by conflict.
