Rayo Vallecano’s La Liga match against Athletic Club was abandoned on Saturday following a disturbance in the home crowd protesting against the club’s ownership.

The contest marked Rayo’s first home game of the season at the Estadio de Vallecas, which had only reopened on a temporary basis after an audit uncovered significant health and safety deficiencies, including the potential for Legionnaires’ disease.

Supporters have long held president Raul Martin Presa accountable for the decline in facility standards and a perceived failure to modernize the club.

In the 13th minute, a period traditionally reserved for chanting “Presa leave now,” supporters began hurling paper planes and rubber balls onto the playing surface.

The referee suspended proceedings while the stadium public address system warned the crowd, and stewards worked quickly to clear the debris from the grass.

When the match resumed 15 minutes later, fans in the south stand once again cast objects onto the field, prompting the official to abandon the goalless contest.

In the aftermath, Athletic Club issued a statement confirming they would liaise with supporters who traveled to Madrid to organize refunds.
