Former Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich urged Democrats to take decisive action against billionaire Elon Musk if they regain control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections. During a recent episode of his Coffee Klatch podcast, Reich emphasized that Musk wields disproportionate political and economic influence and called for lawmakers to investigate and potentially nationalize SpaceX and Starlink.
Reich stated: “When I say defund Musk, you know, 75% of his wealth is dependent on taxpayers who are purchasing Starlink systems for the Department of Defense.” He further urged Democrats to begin laying the groundwork for government oversight and considering the nationalization of both SpaceX and its satellite internet business.
Musk responded on X on October 25, criticizing the former labor secretary’s comments and defending himself against allegations of corporate misconduct. “Stealing companies is a serious crime. Prison for Reich,” Musk wrote, highlighting his opposition to any formal indictment.
Reich also warned that a Democratic administration would be likely to target Musk aggressively, citing his large social media following as potential leverage. He predicted increased congressional scrutiny should Democrats secure the White House, viewing Musk as a central figure of influence.

Reich did not provide substantive evidence supporting his claim that 75% of Musk’s wealth is derived from taxpayer-funded Starlink subscriptions. SpaceX has secured extensive federal contracts with NASA and the Pentagon, which may complicate direct nationalization efforts.
The former labor secretary also noted that Democrats should consider these issues during the 2026 midterm cycle, advocating for oversight hearings and potential corporate restructuring of SpaceX.
Musk’s retort to Reich underscored ongoing political tension between tech elites and progressive activists, with Trump praising Musk as a “genius” while defending him against potential democratic reforms.
