Pat Cummins has confirmed Matt Renshaw’s return to Australia’s Test XI in Mackay ahead of the second Test against Bangladesh, starting on Saturday. This marks Renshaw’s 15th Test appearance, his first since 2023, following Jake Weatherald’s exclusion from the squad after struggling in Darwin—where he was dismissed twice by Hasan Mahmud.
Weatherald’s poor performance—23 and 0—led to his removal, intensifying Australia’s ongoing adjustments to their opening lineup.
Renshaw, who averaged 49.90 in the Sheffield Shield last season with three centuries, has shown promise in white-ball cricket, including a late inclusion in the T20 World Cup squad.
In Test history, Renshaw averages 29.31, with his highest score of 184 against Pakistan in 2017. His return shifts the opening order, with Usman Khawaja now joined by only Travis Head since David Warner’s retirement in 2024.
During his last Test in 2023 against India, Renshaw served as a concussion substitute, batting at No. 5 alongside Head and Khawaja.
