Matt Renshaw delivered a career-defining performance, striking a magnificent 190 to propel Australia to a total of 390 all out on the second day of the first Test against South Africa at Kingsmead. The home side reached 27 for one in reply before bad light halted play.
Having found themselves in a precarious position at 124 for six on the opening day, Renshaw spearheaded a resilient fightback. His momentum carried into the second morning, where he notched his second Test century—a feat achieved nearly a decade after his maiden hundred against Pakistan in Sydney in 2017.
The 30-year-old brought up his century off 204 balls, marked by his tenth four, and was unbeaten on 102 at lunch alongside Nathan Lyon, who was on seven.
Renshaw, expected to open the innings but surprisingly moved down to number five, had been 46 not out overnight. He advanced to his half-century with a boundary off the second ball of the day.
He shared an 86-run partnership with captain Pat Cummins, who was dismissed for 43 after edging a delivery from Wiaan Mulder to second slip, where Aiden Markram took the catch.
Although Mulder claimed the wicket of Mitchell Starc for six, Australia had already added 43 runs to their overnight total of 187 for six. The pitch appeared to offer less bounce and movement compared to the first day.
Mulder emerged as the standout bowler for the home team, finishing with figures of four for 51 from 22 overs and poised to secure his first Test five-wicket haul after lunch.
