Republic of Ireland Confirm Match Against Israel Will Proceed After Last‑Minute Changes
The Republic of Ireland have officially confirmed that Sunday’s UEFA Nations League B3 fixture against Israel in Debrecen, Hungary will proceed as planned.
Although earlier Saturday morning raised doubts about the game’s schedule, last‑minute preparations ensured the match will take place.
A pre‑match press conference with manager Heimir Hallgrimsson and a squad member, originally set for 09:15 BST, was delayed by fifteen minutes and subsequently rescheduled.
The subsequent training session at 10:00 BST also did not materialise – the team retained their lodging while reporters prepared for eventual statements.
In a confined meeting, multiple players – most prominently goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu – indicated a desire to withdraw, raising questions about the game’s viability.
By roughly 13:00 BST, players began vacating the briefing room, allowing the federation to confirm the session would continue later that afternoon at Nagyerdei Stadion for the match scheduled at 14:30 GMT, followed shortly by training.
A significant number of hours had elapsed since the initially proposed meeting time. By midday, FAI CEO David Courell, supported by Hallgrimsson and the FAI Director of Football, declared that a players’ vote passing by a decisive margin secured approval to participate in the competition.
