Rescue teams in Kerala are combing through the debris following a catastrophic landslide that struck the state’s Wayanad district, leaving three dead and five still unaccounted for.
The slide claimed the lives of three construction workers near a tunnel site in Wayanad, a region famed for its verdant hills and dense forests.
Seven additional laborers have been hospitalized with injuries sustained during the collapse.
Emergency responders have cordoned off the affected zone, deploying specialized rescue units and sniffing dogs to locate the missing, even as relentless rain continues to hamper search efforts.
A captured video revealed a massive mound of mud cascading down the slope, uprooting trees and dragging away metal and fabric barriers surrounding the tunnel worksite.
Kerala’s Agriculture Minister T. Siddique remarked that the catastrophe was “not a natural landslide but a man‑made disaster resulting from unsound earth dumping,” as reported by the Press Trust of India.
He further alleged that the site’s construction waste had been left unattended despite official admonitions.
The contracting firm contests the accusation, asserting that the landslide originated higher up the slope, according to the news agency.
Authorities have initiated a formal inquiry into the incident.
Similar catastrophic weather events last year inflicted extensive loss of life and property across India.
Analysts attribute the increasing intensity of South Asian monsoons to anthropogenic climate change, which now brings more erratic and heavy downpours.
These monsoon cycles, traditionally confined to June‑September and October‑December, are now delivering concentrated bursts of rain interspersed with dry spells.
Heavy rains have recently battered western and northern India, prompting floods and landslides; the deluge has also affected New Delhi and surrounding states, offering respite from heat while water‑logging many locales.
The India Meteorological Department forecasts additional heavy precipitation across northern regions over the coming three days.
