KKR didn’t need a reminder that they’re short a captain. What they got instead, on a Sunday in Lucknow, was a reminder that the answer might already be on their roster, and he just spent the weekend proving it in the most public way possible.
Rinku Singh led Meerut Mavericks to the UPT20 title, beating Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s Lucknow Falcons by a lopsided 94 runs at Ekana Stadium. The scorecard tells an almost inverse story to the headline: Rinku himself managed just one run off two balls in the final, while opener Divyansh Joshi did the heavy lifting with an explosive 105 off 40.
Meerut’s 203/7 buried the Falcons, who folded for 109. But the number that matters more than any of those is nine from ten, Rinku’s win rate as captain across the tournament. Whatever case he is building, it isn’t being made with the bat right now. It’s being made in the column that says “wins.”
Why Rinku Singh’s Win Comes at the Perfect Time for KKR
The timing isn’t incidental. Ajinkya Rahane’s retirement from all formats has left Kolkata without a leader heading into 2027, and Rinku, already installed as vice-captain for the 2026 season specifically as leadership grooming, is the internal favorite by default.
KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar all but said as much before this season even started, describing Rinku as someone the dressing room already looks to and calling it “the perfect time” to hand him more responsibility.
The Case Against Rinku Singh Isn’t About Talent
Here is the tension KKR actually has to sit with: Rinku’s franchise résumé is superb, including nearly a decade with KKR, 1,394 runs in 73 matches, the moment that made him a household name (five sixes off five balls to sink Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad), and the franchise’s top run-scorer in 2026. What he doesn’t have is senior captaincy pedigree at the level KKR is about to hand him.
His domestic leadership sample is Meerut, featuring a UPT20 title in 2024, runners-up in 2025, a combined 13 wins in 18 games, plus a Vijay Hazare Trophy stint leading Uttar Pradesh. Promising, but still a notch below leading a full IPL franchise through knockout cricket.
Narine and Powell Are Still in the Frame
KKR’s alternatives aren’t nothing. Sunil Narine has been in Knight Riders colors since 2012 and remains the league’s most prolific overseas wicket-taker, though he has never captained KKR in over a decade of trying.
Rovman Powell brings actual international captaincy experience, having led West Indies 37 times in T20Is, but his KKR minutes are thin: two games in 2025 and eleven in 2026. Neither profile screams “obvious upgrade” over a player the coaching staff has spent a full season positioning for exactly this.
What Happens Next Isn’t Really Up to Rinku Singh
The trade window stays open until a week before December’s auction, then reopens after, which means KKR has months to either commit to Rinku or go shopping. With just one season left in the current three-year IPL cycle, there’s a real argument for treating 2027 as a bridge year: install a stop-gap, then make the real captaincy call once the next cycle’s retentions and auction reshape the roster anyway.
Rinku didn’t need to score runs in Lucknow to make his point. He needed to win, and let the timing do the rest.
