Rajasthan Royals‘ remarkable IPL 2026 campaign concluded in disappointment following a loss to Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2. The defeat dashed their hopes of reaching the final and prolonged their quest for a second Indian Premier League title, with their sole victory still rooted in the tournament’s inaugural season of 2008. Despite several standout performances during the season, Rajasthan couldn’t counter a dominant Gujarat side in the high-stakes knockout match.
After the game, Royals captain Riyan Parag addressed the loss, dissecting the critical factors that influenced the outcome.
Parag Reflects on Defeat in Qualifier 2 Clash
In a post-match discussion, Parag acknowledged that Rajasthan’s total of 214/6, while competitive, fell short in a pressure-filled playoff scenario. He emphasized that the team had opportunities to accelerate in the latter stages but failed to maximize them. Parag noted that the pitch initially favored spinners and slower deliveries, complicating the batting effort. However, the surface improved after rolling, enabling Gujarat’s batsmen to play more freely. He suggested that a target closer to 230–240 could have exerted greater pressure, highlighting how margins of 15–20 runs often prove decisive in such high-pressure matches.
“It was a par score. I think 215 was defendable but I felt the wicket got a little better in the second innings after the heavy roller. In the first innings, I felt the spinners had a little bit more grip and the shorter, slower balls were sticking up a bit more. So I feel it was a passable score, but it could have been better. At one stage it looked as if 230 was on the cards, which in these big games can make a difference – those extra 15-20 runs. I think 230-240 would have made that chase really challenging,” Parag stated during his post-match analysis.
Parag also underscored Rajasthan’s failure to break Gujarat’s opening partnership early in the chase. Aware of Gujarat’s batting depth, the Royals had strategized to secure early wickets but couldn’t execute. The lack of breakthroughs allowed Gujarat’s openers to dominate, shifting momentum decisively in their favor. Without early pressure, Rajasthan’s bowlers struggled to contain the chase, leaving the team reactive rather than proactive.
“But with 215, given their batting lineup, we knew we had to get the openers early, which we didn’t. And it was always going to be a tough road after that,” he added.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi Steals Spotlight Despite Early Wobble
Earlier, Rajasthan Royals showcased resilience after a shaky start. Choosing to bat first, they lost two wickets for just nine runs, appearing vulnerable. Teenage prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi responded with a scintillating 96 off 47 balls, anchoring the innings with fearless strokeplay. His explosive knock stabilized the innings, while Donovan Ferreira provided the late surge with an unbeaten 38 off 11 balls, propelling Rajasthan to 214/6 in 20 overs.
Shubman Gill’s Century Drives Titans Into Final
Gujarat Titans delivered a commanding batting performance despite the steep target. Captain Shubman Gill anchored the chase with a magnificent 104 off 53 balls, blending elegance and aggression. He found strong support from Sai Sudharsan, who contributed 58 off 32 deliveries. The pair forged a 167-run opening partnership, sealing the match with Gujarat reaching 219/3 in 18.4 overs. The win set up a final clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, while Rajasthan Royals exited the tournament in heartbreaking fashion.
