Few managerial ascents in modern football can rival the trajectory of Robbie Savage. Just over two years ago, the 51-year-old former Wales international took the reins at Macclesfield FC, the phoenix club reborn after the winding up of Macclesfield Town in 2020, then competing in the seventh-tier Northern Premier League Premier Division.
His solitary season at the Leasing.com Stadium was nothing short of dominant. Savage guided the Silkmen to a staggering 109 points and 109 goals, securing promotion to the National League North with a record-breaking campaign.
However, Savage’s stay in Cheshire was brief. The former Leicester City, Derby County, Blackburn Rovers, and Birmingham City midfielder departed for National League outfit Forest Green Rovers in the summer of 2023. In his only full season at the New Lawn, he steered the Gloucestershire side into the play-offs, only to see their promotion hopes ended by Boreham Wood.
At the time of his departure for Peterborough, Forest Green sat 13th in the table after eleven matches, having recorded four wins, three draws, and four defeats. Yet, for Savage himself—just 836 days removed from his first managerial role in non-league’s seventh tier—he has now landed a League One post.
“Excitement is the word I would use to describe the appointment of Robbie Savage as our new manager,” declared Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony. “His personality, character, and mindset are exactly what we need from top to bottom. Nobody will work harder to get us up and running again than Robbie. The board were blown away by him during an extensive interview process, and his hunger to fix our issues and restore confidence into a talented squad is what excites me most.”
