Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Eye Milestones in India’s ODI Series vs West Indies

The three‑match ODI series between India and the West Indies kicks off in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, with all eyes on two of modern cricket’s most iconic Indian batsmen.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, now concentrating solely on the 50‑over format, return to the fray as the 2027 World Cup looms on the horizon.

The series presents a chance for both stalwarts to enrich their already illustrious record books. Rohit is nearing the 12,000‑run landmark, while Kohli is poised to chase an even larger milestone.

Rohit Sharma: 105 runs from 12,000 ODI runs

Heading into the series, Rohit has amassed 11,895 ODI runs across 288 matches and 280 innings, leaving him just 105 runs shy of becoming only the third Indian—and the 15th batter overall—to breach the 12,000‑run barrier in ODIs. His record against the West Indies is impressive: in 37 ODIs he has scored 1,613 runs at an average of 57.60, with three centuries and twelve half‑centuries, his best knock being 162.

Another attainable goal is 10,000 runs as an opener, a feat that would highlight his durability at the top of the order. Rohit needs 135 more runs to reach that mark, which would make him only the second Indian after Sachin Tendulkar to achieve it.

Virat Kohli: 59 runs from 15,000 ODI runs

Kohli’s immediate target is clear: he stands at 14,941 ODI runs and requires just 59 more to become the second batsman in men’s cricket, after Sachin Tendulkar, to reach 15,000. He could also set the record for the fastest arrival at that milestone, having already reached 10,000 ODI runs in a mere 205 innings.

The West Indies have long been a favorite hunting ground for Kohli. In 43 matches he has piled up 2,261 runs at an average of 66.50, featuring nine centuries and eleven fifties. One more hundred would give him ten ODI centuries against the West Indies, placing him alongside Sri Lanka as the only teams against which he has recorded double‑digit hundred tallies. Additionally, Kohli has 41 centuries on home soil; two more would eclipse Sachin Tendulkar’s 42‑century record in India.

With both veterans carrying significant statistical aims into the series, the three ODIs offer more than just preparation for the 2027 World Cup—they add another chapter to two remarkable ODI careers.
