Rohit Sharma produced a brilliant piece of fielding to secure a vital breakthrough for India against New Zealand in the opening ODI of the five-match series. The former India captain used his sharp reflexes and situational awareness to run out dangerous batter Daryl Mitchell, halting a potentially damaging partnership in the series opener at Eden Park, Auckland.
Rohit Sharma’s Quick Thinking Results in Daryl Mitchell’s Run-Out
The wicket fell during the 21st over, with Axar Patel bowling to Glenn Phillips. Mitchell guided the ball toward the leg side and appeared set for a quick single, but a brief hesitation between the New Zealand batters gave Rohit the opening he needed.
Positioned at mid-wicket, Rohit reacted instantly, moved toward the ball, gathered it cleanly, and unleashed an accurate underarm throw at the stumps. Wicketkeeper KL Rahul completed the dismissal with sharp glovework, finding Mitchell short of his crease.
India’s players marked the breakthrough with immediate celebration, while the crowd responded enthusiastically to Rohit’s outstanding fielding effort.

Daryl Mitchell departed for 28 runs from 41 balls, featuring three boundaries and a six. Though not a large score, his dismissal proved highly valuable for India, especially given his strong recent record in ODIs. The New Zealand batter had previously scored four centuries and two half-centuries in his last seven innings against India.
India Bowls Out New Zealand for 185
India produced a disciplined bowling display to dismiss New Zealand for 185 in the first ODI.
Having won the toss and chosen to bowl first, the visitors applied consistent pressure with regular breakthroughs. Arshdeep Singh spearheaded the attack with four wickets in his ten overs, while Gurnoor Brar claimed two. Tim Seifert offered some resistance with 38 runs from 43 balls, including three fours and two sixes. However, New Zealand failed to build substantial partnerships as India’s bowlers exploited the conditions effectively.
New Zealand kept losing wickets at regular intervals, leaving the lower order with significant work to do. Blair Tickner added some late impetus with an aggressive 34 off 23 balls, supported by Jacob Duffy. Their final-wicket stand of 39 runs gave the hosts a modest boost before Brar dismissed Tickner to end the innings. New Zealand were eventually bowled out in 40.2 overs, leaving India a target of 186 runs to win the opener.
India’s bowlers will be satisfied with their controlled effort, while the batting lineup—featuring Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and captain Shubman Gill—will now aim to complete the chase and give the visitors an early lead in the five-match series.
