Romania Expels Russian Consul Following Apartment Building Drone Strike in Galati
Romanian President Nicusor Dan has announced the expulsion of the Russian consul in the southeastern city of Constanța and the closure of the consulate following a drone strike that damaged an apartment complex in the border town of Galati. The attack occurred shortly after Russia launched a series of drones targeting Ukraine, with one missile crashing off course and striking a residential building. President Dan, speaking at a press briefing on May 29, 2026, condemned the strike as an “unacceptable violation” of Romanian sovereignty and public safety, stating that the action was a direct consequence of Moscow’s aggression in the region.
Romanian President Nicusor Dan said: “The rashness of Russian military incompetence has struck civilian infrastructure beyond our borders. This threat to public security will not be tolerated.” The consulate in Constanța, a major trade and cultural hub, will be “permanently closed,” according to officials.
The attack follows a broader escalation of air strikes against Ukrainian military sites amid ongoing conflicts. Romanian and Ukrainian authorities have since reopened the area and confirmed no casualties.
