Charlie Kirk, a prominent ally of Donald Trump and founder of the youth organization Turning Point USA, was pronounced dead at a hospital following the shooting.
During an interview with prosecutors, roommate Twiggs stated that Robinson occasionally discussed politics and listened to political radio programs during his commute to work as an electrician. Twiggs noted, however, that he did not share those interests and rarely contributed to such conversations.
According to Twiggs, who was granted immunity in exchange for cooperating with investigators, Robinson’s comments focused primarily on former President Trump or new legislation, and the two never discussed Kirk. Twiggs also said they did not talk about LGBT issues.
On the day of the shooting, Robinson left their apartment earlier than usual, around 4:00 a.m. Twiggs assumed he was traveling to a more distant job site, based on what Robinson later said in a recorded interview.
After the killing, Robinson texted Twiggs, urging him to “drop what you’re doing” and “look under your keyboard.” When Twiggs asked if Robinson was responsible, he replied: “I am. I’m sorry.”
Asked why, Robinson wrote that he had “had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.”
In a note addressed to Twiggs as “Luna,” Robinson wrote: “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I took it. I wish we could have lived in a world where this was not necessary.” The note concluded: “Please try and find joy in this life. I love you always, Tyler.”
Robinson continued texting Twiggs that night from near the campus where Kirk was shot. He said he had hidden his rifle in bushes after changing clothes and was waiting to retrieve it. “If I’m able to grab my rifle unseen, I will have left no evidence,” he wrote.
He complained about loud crickets and feared a police dog had located the firearm, noting a heavy police presence and squad cars nearby. “I’m just sitting in my car watching reels for another hour,” he texted.
Robinson also messaged that he was leaving Orem, Utah — where the shooting occurred — and heading back to their shared apartment in St. George, more than 200 miles away.
