Following the British Open, Rory McIlroy made a candid observation that PGA Tour executives may find unsettling.
The 37‑year‑old Northern Irishman confirmed that the PGA Tour and the FedEx Cup no longer excite him to the same extent as in previous years.
Rory noted that recent changes to the PGA Tour schedule, particularly the restructuring of the Tour Championship, have contributed to his fluctuating enthusiasm.
The tournament adopted a straight 72‑hole stroke‑play format in 2025, replacing the previous staggered‑start approach and reducing the significance of preceding events.
Now, the top 30 players qualify through a points‑based system.
\”I need only to be among the top 30 heading into the event to have a realistic chance at the FedEx Cup,\” McIlroy said. \”Consequently, I question the value of the early tournaments. I arrived at this perspective last year and have maintained it.\”
This admission follows McIlroy’s underwhelming performance at the British Open, where he finished tied for 40th at one‑under‑par.
He admitted to feeling \”stuck in neutral\” for much of the week, repeatedly finding himself with bogeys whenever he sensed a surge of momentum.
Despite the weekend’s shortcomings, McIlroy continues to position himself among the sport’s all‑time greats, having completed the career Grand Slam with a victory at the 2026 Masters.
However, this very success appears to be eroding his enthusiasm for competing in smaller tournaments.
\”Having spent nearly two decades in the sport,\” McIlroy said after the Scottish Open, \”I am focused on preserving my enthusiasm, and a lighter schedule certainly helps.\”
The world No. 2 golfer added that a reduced schedule enables him to spend more time with his wife, Erica, and daughter, Poppy.
The Northern Irishman plans to take an extended break after the British Open, with intentions to rest for several weeks before the Tour Championship in late August.
McIlroy noted that he has yet to celebrate his April Masters victory and intends to do so during his upcoming break.
