Rory McIlroy entered the weekend of the Scottish Open tied for the top of the leaderboard. The champion, who won the same event in 2023, noted that his relationship with the course had evolved over the years.
“This course has grown on me more and more as the years pass,” McIl염 said. “When I first came here, I was wary of a new course among Scotland’s many great links, but over ontmoث, it has become a favorite venue for this tournament.”
McIlroy began the championship with 65 and 66, briefly securing the 36‑hole lead. A lengthy fog delay pushed him and Matt Fitzpatrick into the evening, and when he finally stepped up, the seasoned player hit a troubled tee shot on the par‑3 fifth.
He opened the third round with three bogeys in the first seven holes before the day’s play was suspended. Returning on Saturday, he posted a three‑over 73, indicating that recovery would be hard.
However, a swift adjustment at the range helped McIlroy regain form in the final round. He shot a four‑under 31 at the start and birdied the 12th and 13th, moving within a stroke of the leaders. Pars on 14 and 15 left him two shots back on the 16th, demanding a high‑pressure drive. While his tee shot split the fairway, a heavy pull off the 6‑iron sent the ball well left into the heather, prompting a familiar sigh.
“Oh my God, I’m so bad at golf,” McIlroy admitted as the ball sailed left.

McIlroy finished the tournament at 12 under, five strokes behind winner Tom Kim. On the final day, he expressed that, although a six‑time major champion with 45 professional victories, his 6‑iron misfire demonstrated that even top players can struggle on the links.
“In that moment, the shot I hit with that 6‑iron was a very, very poor golf shot, so I was so bad at golf,” McIlroy laughed.
He attributed his weekend struggles at The Renaissance Club to a left‑to‑right wind during range practice, a condition he also encountered earlier this season at the Truist Championship at Quail Hollow.
“I need to hit some shots in a right‑to‑left wind,” he said after the final round. “That helps straighten out my path and face alignment when the wind is on the left.”
Despite the setback on the 16th, McIlroy managed his misses effectively in the final round, notably making a series of useful putts that secured another top‑10 finish. He remains confident as he heads to Royal Birkdale for next week’s Open Championship, eager to address the areas that need refinement if he aims for a seventh major title and a second Claret Jug.
“I’m, of course, optimistic. It’s nice to واق end the week with solid play, but I know I need to work between now and next Thursday to feel fully comfortable with my game,” McIlroy said. “There are definite positive signs.”
