Hall of Fame boxer Roy Jones Jr. asserts that Gervonta Davis must assume substantial risks to potentially overcome compatriot Shakur Stevenson.
The two athletes have been on a potential collision course since their early professional careers, with fans and analysts eagerly anticipating their long-awaited showdown.
For the highly anticipated bout to materialize, Davis must return to the ring, having not competed since March 2025.
In his previous encounter, ‘Tank’ defended the WBA lightweight title in a contentious draw against Lamont Roach, a result many felt denied Roach a well-deserved victory.
However, instead of pursuing an immediate rematch, Davis shifted focus to an exhibition bout with Jake Paul, which was subsequently scrapped in November due to domestic violence allegations.
Following these developments, the 31-year-old has been granted WBA ‘champion in recess’ status and appears poised for a ring comeback later this year, potentially setting the stage for a clash with Stevenson.
Analyzing both fighters’ physical and technical strengths, Jones informed FightHype that Davis must strike a balance between assertiveness and recklessness to disrupt Stevenson’s disciplined footwork.
“I think Tank’s is going to have to give up a lot to beat Shakur, because Shakur is going to keep them feet on him.
“You’ve got to gamble against them feet; you can’t just go out there and box and think you’re going to beat him – as Teofimo [Lopez] found out.
“If you don’t gamble with them feet, he’s going to beat you all night. [Stevenson’s] comfortable being on that back leg and being smart about it.”
Given Stevenson’s masterful performance against Teofimo Lopez in January, many pundits now favor his technical skill and consistency over Davis’s explosive power.
