Rubio Urges Houthis to Avoid Iran Conflict, Says They Were Lured Into War by Tehran

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Thursday that the Houthis should refrain from involvement in the Iran conflict, asserting that they had been drawn into the Middle East war by Tehran, Anadolu reports.

“I hope they will cease this activity. They should not be involved; they were drawn into this by the Iranians,” Rubio told reporters while in the Philippines.

“The Houthis had largely remained wise and avoided the conflict until now, but it appears they have become entangled, even targeting Saudi Arabia and its vessels,” Rubio remarked.

He voiced his hope for de‑escalation, stating that the Houthis “should stay out of it and cease their actions. We will see how events unfold; clearly, this is not a positive development.”

The senior U.S. diplomat argued that whenever Iran reaches an agreement, its leaders either violate it or seek to alter it, indicating that Tehran is presently unprepared to commit to a deal.

Rubio added that Iran appears eager to negotiate with the United States, but “the issue is that whenever they strike a deal, they either break it or later attempt to modify it.”

“They are likely not ready for an agreement at this moment, but they may be soon, given the steep cost they are incurring,” Rubio said, noting that President Donald Trump’s approach follows a “head for an eye” principle.

“The cost will keep rising each night until they reconsider their position. As of now, they have not done so,” Rubio observed, emphasizing that Tehran is already “facing a substantial burden.”
