Russian Overnight Barrage Kills Three in Ukraine as Kyiv Endures Second Night of Strikes

KYIV, Ukraine — Russian drone and missile attacks killed three people across Ukraine overnight Wednesday, including one fatality in the capital, where powerful explosions rattled residents for the second consecutive night.

Several blasts were heard in Kyiv shortly after midnight, preceding the issuance of an air raid alert — an unusual sequence that deprived civilians of the typical warning window to seek shelter.

In Kharkiv, Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported two deaths and 20 injuries from a series of overnight strikes.

Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched 169 long-range attack drones and seven missiles, including five ballistic missiles. Air defenses intercepted or jammed 139 drones, while two anti-radar missiles missed their targets. All five ballistic missiles and 20 drones struck targets at 15 locations, the Air Force said, highlighting the sustained pressure on Ukraine’s air defense network.

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed its forces struck defense industry facilities in Kyiv overnight, targeting a plant producing components for Flamingo cruise missiles and a facility assembling medium- and long-range drones.

The ministry also reported downing 415 Ukrainian drones from late Tuesday into early Wednesday. Saratov region Governor Roman Busargin said a Ukrainian drone attack killed one person, injured several others, and damaged unspecified industrial facilities.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukrainian long-range strikes reached Saratov, Tatarstan, and Bashkortostan — approximately 800, 1,400, and 1,500 kilometers from the front line, respectively — as well as the Voronezh region, roughly 300 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Zelenskyy said the strikes hit the Saratov oil refinery and another refinery in Tatarstan.

Russia’s state-controlled gas giant Gazprom said Ukrainian drones attacked the Krasnodarskaya compressor station serving the Blue Stream natural gas pipeline to Turkey late Tuesday. The company said the attack aimed to disrupt Russian gas shipments to Turkey but caused no supply interruption.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov characterized the strike as another “dangerous” attack on “the critical international energy system” and expressed hope that Turkey and other nations would warn Kyiv against such actions.

Nizhnekamsk Mayor Radmir Belyayev said Ukrainian drones damaged industrial facilities in the city and injured several people, without specifying the affected sites.

Rostov region Governor Yuri Slyusar reported that Ukrainian drones struck and damaged two oil tankers in Taganrog Bay, injuring two crew members and forcing the evacuation of one ship’s crew. Slyusar said no oil spill occurred because the tankers, en route to the port of Rostov-on-Don, were empty.

In Ukraine, Kyiv city administration head Tymur Tkachenko said Russian attacks killed one woman and injured two others in the capital. Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported damage to several administrative buildings and warehouses, a garage complex, and multiple city trams.

In Zaporizhzhia, a Russian guided bomb injured an elderly man and a woman overnight, regional head Ivan Fedorov said.
