Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy grid have resulted in electricity outages across multiple regions, prompting the grid operator Ukrenergo to advise consumers to reduce their energy consumption, the company announced Thursday.

The outages span a wide geographical area, affecting the Kharkiv region in the east, Chernihiv and Sumy in the north, Rivne in the northwest, and Kirovohrad in central Ukraine.

“Emergency repair and restoration efforts are currently underway in areas where security conditions permit,” the company stated.

“Our energy workers are working tirelessly to restore power to all affected consumers as quickly as possible.”

These disruptions follow Moscow’s declaration on Wednesday that it had intentionally targeted energy infrastructure in Kyiv and its surrounding regions using drones and missiles.

Ukrainian officials characterized these strikes as the beginning of a strategic campaign intended to disable heating and electricity supplies as winter approaches.

The recent surge in aerial attacks has intensified concerns regarding a potential energy crisis during the colder months, echoing the challenges faced last year when temperatures dropped to -20C.

Kyiv experienced emergency power outages on Wednesday night.

Ukrenergo has requested that residential users shift heavy energy usage to daytime hours, noting that “economical” consumption will be necessary in certain areas during the evenings.

While hourly outages and capacity restrictions for industrial users are not currently in effect, the operator continues to urge a reduction in electricity use at night, particularly in Kyiv and its outskirts.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russian forces also struck a school in Kyiv as Moscow escalates its campaign against the capital. Authorities confirmed that children and teachers were safely in a shelter at the time, and no casualties were reported.

“Russian aggressors continue to attack the fabric of life across our country, targeting our children and our schools,” Zelenskyy shared on X, accompanying his message with footage showing a building with shattered windows.

Zelenskyy has consistently called upon international allies for increased military assistance, specifically requesting US-made interceptor missiles to counter Russia’s advanced ballistic missile capabilities.

“Every interceptor missile saves lives,” he emphasized on Wednesday. “As winter approaches, the need for this protection becomes even more critical.”

Attacks in Odesa

In the southern port city of Odesa, local authorities reported that one person was injured during an overnight strike. The attack hit a business center, igniting a fire and causing structural damage to the roof and facades of two adjacent buildings.

The explosion shattered windows and caused partial wall collapses on the fifth floor, according to the Odesa Regional State Emergency Service.

“A fire broke out at the site and was subsequently extinguished by firefighting teams. Regrettably, one individual sustained injuries,” said Oleksander Kolosyuk, a representative for the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched 107 drones overnight, including 63 jet-powered models. Attacks were documented across 11 different locations, with debris falling in four areas. The Air Force noted that the operation was ongoing as more drones remained in flight.
