After a brief teaser clip generated excitement online, Dead Man’s Bones—the duo of Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields—has officially returned with its first new music in 17 years. “Lost in the Night” was produced with longtime collaborator Tim Anderson and arrives with a black-and-white music video starring Noah Jupe of Hamnet and Rain Spencer of The Summer I Turned Pretty, drawing on the track’s lovestruck lyrics.
Dead Man’s Bones spent recent years attempting to write new material but could not settle on a recording location. The duo tested several Los Angeles studios before driving to a farm outside the city with two guitars, two drum machines, and two synthesizers, ultimately recording “Lost in the Night” in a single day.
The group’s first and only album arrived in 2009. For the self-titled debut, Gosling and Shields collaborated with the Silverlake Conservatory Children’s Choir, a California education organization founded by Flea, to create a blend of indie rock, gothic folk, and doo-wop. The duo largely withdrew from public view after promoting the record, though interest persisted through covers—including Cat Power’s take on “Pa Pa Power” for her 2022 album Covers—various film and television syncs, and an annual Halloween uptick as social media users revisited their music.
