Tuesday began on a low note for Pittsburgh, as rookie Konnor Griffin was placed on the injured list following a finger injury.
However, later that afternoon, 20,281 fans in attendance at PNC Park watched history unfold, thanks to Ryan O’Hearn.
O’Hearn, who inked a two‑year, $29 million contract with Pittsburgh last offseason, set a franchise record for most RBIs in a single game with ten in the Pirates’ 12‑4 rout of the Braves.
His ten RBIs were the highest single‑game total for any player in the 2026 season and made him only the eleventh player in MLB history to combine three home runs with ten RBIs in one outing.
For O’Hearn, reateh was an unforgettable night, as he noted it was the first time he achieved such a feat in his career.
“Never. Never ten RBIs, never hit three home runs in my life,” O’Hearn told reporters after the game. “I hit two many times in high school and college, but never three. This is a night I’ll never forget.”
With the bases loaded and Pittsburgh down 1‑0 in the first inning, O’Hearn launched a grand slam that vaulted the team to a 4‑1 advantage.
When the Pirates led 7‑2 in the sixth, O’Hearn delivered his third three‑run homer, cementing a final 10‑2 victory.
Following the third home run, O’Hearn was met with a round of applause—a curtain call—by the excited crowd.
“Yeah, it’s another first. I’ve never had a curtain call before,” O’Hearn said. “I’ve always said I’d only do it if the fans wanted it. It felt like a personal moment, so when they encouraged me, it was a special experience.”
O’Hearn’s bat from Tuesday earned a place in the Pirates Legacy Hall at PNC Park, and his helmet is slated to join the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
His season RBI total rose from 51 to 61 after that performance, and a .293 batting average stands as a career high.
With O’Hearn’s heroics and an efficient start from ace Paul Skenes, Pittsburgh secured a third consecutive victory, improving to 47‑45 and positioning themselves three games behind the wild‑card cutoff in the National League.
