Elena Rybakina has firmly established herself as the world’s top-ranked tennis player by defeating two-time US Open champion Aryna Sabalenka to claim her first major title at the tournament in New York.
The Kazakhstani player secured her maiden US Open victory, overcoming the top-seeded and defending champion Sabalenka with a final score of 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Having already clinched the Australian Open title earlier in the year, Rybakina was assured of taking the No 1 ranking from Sabalenka the following week.
