Sabrina Carpenter Cast as Ginger Rogers in Tom Holland’s Fred Astaire Biopic

Singer Sabrina Carpenter will take on the role of iconic dancer Ginger Rogers in the upcoming Fred Astaire biopic starring Tom Holland, announced director Paul King on Friday.

Carpenter’s “House Tour” video collaborator Margaret Qualley will portray Adele Astaire, Fred’s sister and original dance partner, in the long-awaited film. While Fred Astaire and Rogers created cinematic history together, the pioneering contributions of the Astaire siblings’ early stage career are frequently overlooked.

“I am thrilled and honored to have been entrusted with telling the story of Fred Astaire and his original dance partner — his big sister Adele — on the big screen,” King said in a statement to Variety.

“Fred left a timeless legacy of dance on film, most famously through his collaborations with Ginger Rogers, while Adele’s work has been lost to history. No footage of her dancing survives. The cinematic challenge of bringing these icons of the twentieth century to life is one that I could not imagine without Tom Holland, Margaret Qualley and Sabrina Carpenter by my side.”

Before launching her music career, Carpenter began in acting, appearing in series like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Orange Is the New Black, and Girl Meets World. She has also appeared in films including The Hate U Give and Tall Girl, though she hasn’t had a film credit since 2022.

The still-untitled Astaire biopic, which has been in development for over five years, has the endorsement of the legendary performer’s estate. Kathleen Riley’s biography The Astaires: Fred & Adele serves as the basis for the film.
