Two days after the passing of the legendary actor Sam Neill, details surrounding his death have been disclosed.

Philip Grenz, Neill’s long-time representative, confirmed the cause of death as pneumonia. In a statement shared with Entertainment Weekly on Wednesday, Grenz noted the actor’s private nature and the family’s decision to hold a private memorial at his New Zealand farm in the near future. “As Sam was an intensely private man who loathed a fuss, his family will honor him with a private family memorial at his farm in New Zealand at a still-undetermined later date.”

The announcement of Neill’s death at the age of 78 follows his recent revelation of being cancer-free after a prolonged battle with lymphoma. In 2023, the actor had disclosed a stage 3 blood cancer diagnosis. During an interview with The Guardian, Neill candidly shared, “I’m not afraid to die,” but expressed a desire for more time, remarking, “it would annoy me. Because I’d really like another decade or two, you know? We’ve built all these lovely terraces, we’ve got these olive trees and cypresses, and I want to be around to see it all mature. And I’ve got my lovely little grandchildren. I want to see them get big.” He concluded, “But as for the dying? I couldn’t care less.”

Known globally for his role as Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, Sam Neill enjoyed a distinguished career spanning film and television. Rising to prominence in the 1990s, he starred in critically acclaimed films including The Hunt for Red October, The Piano, Jurassic Park, Event Horizon, and The Horse Whisperer.

Following news of his passing, heartfelt tributes from fans and industry figures flooded social media. Bryce Dallas Howard, star of Jurassic World: Dominion, shared a poignant reflection on Neill’s character, stating he was “exactly who you hoped he’d be. Funny, warm, wickedly self-deprecating, endlessly kind. A beautiful human being who happened to also be Alan Grant.” She added, “I’m so sad for the world today but especially for those who got to see him every day. He lit up every room he walked into and made the experience of being human feel dazzling.”
