Jurassic Park actor Sam Neill died from pneumonia, according to his longtime representative Philip Grenz, who clarified the circumstances following the family’s announcement of his passing on September 15, 2023. While initial reports did not specify a cause, Grenz emphasized Neill had been in remission from lymphoma, having undergone CAR-T cell therapy the previous year, before his sudden illness.
The family’s statement described his death as “sudden and unexpected,” adding that he had remained cancer-free prior to his pneumonia diagnosis. Grenz addressed “inaccuracies and outright falsehoods” in media coverage, confirming Neill’s ongoing professional activity in the months before his death, including managing his Two Paddocks winery and completing four upcoming film projects.
In line with Neill’s preference for privacy, the family announced plans for a private memorial at his New Zealand farm. They requested donations to the Dunstan Hospital Foundation, Snowdome Foundation, and environmental charities in lieu of flowers, honoring his legacy and advocacy for blood cancer research and conservation efforts.
