CAPE TOWN, South Africa – The National Nuclear Regulator stated on Thursday that no radioactive material was released into the environment during three recent contamination incidents at the Koeberg Power Station, Africa’s only commercial nuclear facility.
The events involved elevated airborne radioactive contamination within the plant’s containment structures during maintenance activities, when ventilation systems temporarily lost power. The regulator emphasized that all incidents were localized and posed no risk to public safety.
The three separate incidents occurred on June 30, July 2, and July 7, with contamination levels remaining restricted to the facility’s internal systems. Subsequent inspections confirmed no off-site radiological impacts, and the regulator classified none of the events as a formal nuclear or radiological incident.
Employees who may have been present during the incidents underwent health screenings, with detected radiation levels significantly lower than those associated with a standard dental X-ray, according to the regulator.
Located approximately 40 kilometers north of Cape Town, the Koeberg plant houses two reactors that contribute roughly 5% of South Africa’s electricity. Operated by Eskom, the facility received approval for a 20-year life extension in recent years, ensuring operations through the 2040s.
South Africa aims to expand its nuclear energy infrastructure to address chronic electricity shortages and reduce reliance on coal-fired power. Similar initiatives are underway in other African nations, such as Egypt, which is constructing its first nuclear power station with four Russian reactors expected to generate 10% of the country’s electricity by 2030, according to the World Nuclear Association.
