San Diego Padres Place Gavin Sheets and Luis Rengifo on 10-Day Injured List

Entering Sunday, with the San Diego Padres tied for the final National League wild‑card berth with the Arizona Diamondbacks, the club placed first baseman/outfielder Gavin Sheets and utility infielder Luis Rengifo on the 10‑day injured list.

Sheets, 30, who also functions as the Padres’ designated hitter, is sidelined by a left foot sprain suffered Saturday while running the bases.

Rengifo, 29, was carted off the field Saturday after suffering a right knee sprain while making a throw.

In corresponding transactions, the Padres activated outfielder Samad Taylor from the injured list and recalled utility man Sung‑Mun Song from Triple‑A El Paso.

In his second season with the Padres after four years with the Chicago White Sox, Sheets is batting .211 with 16 home runs and 46 RBIs in 123 appearances. The White Sox’s 2017 second‑round pick holds a .232 career average with 81 home runs and 292 RBIs over 703 games.

Rengifo is posting a .291 average with four home runs and 17 RBIs in 38 games in his first season with San Diego. The veteran previously spent seven years with the Los Angeles Angels before signing with the Milwaukee Brewers on February 16, struggled there, posting a .205 average with 19 RBIs in 57 games, and was released on June 23; he signed with the Padres six days later.

Across 768 games over eight seasons, Rengifo carries a .248 career batting average with 66 home runs and 266 RBIs.

Taylor, 28, debuted with the Kansas City Royals in 2023 and spent the 2024‑25 campaign with the Seattle Mariners. He joined the Padres this season, hitting .330 with one home run and 11 RBIs in 26 games. A 2016 10th‑round pick of Cleveland, he has a .273 career average with one home run and 15 RBIs in 64 games.

Song, 30, made his major‑league debut on April 26 for the Padres and has compiled a .202 average with one home run and 15 RBIs in 62 appearances.
