In a detailed post on X, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella outlined the risks associated with highly capable AI systems and proposed ways to mitigate them. He argued that we cannot continue to view AI as opaque “black boxes” whose outputs we blindly accept or dismiss. Instead, Nadella advocates for a transparent framework that allows models to be contained, monitored, and that produces tamper‑proof, human‑readable evidence.

Many of his suggestions echo industry calls for prompt incident reporting, independent audits, verifiable data pipelines, and robust containment measures. However, Nadella pushes the containment idea a step further than many peers, stating:

We must assume a model is compromised and contain it from the start. Think of it like an emergency brake. An authorized person should always be able to pause or shut down a model mid-task. More advanced models will require more advanced containment technologies that we need to standardize on.

Regrettably, Nadella repeatedly describes AI as “super intelligence” throughout his post.
