WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of State warned on Monday that American residents in Saudi Arabia should “remain vigilant,” because renewed fighting across neighboring Yemen threatens to pull the oil‑rich kingdom back into a full‑scale war against the Houthis.
A newly issued travel advisory from the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh cautions that “the potential for aerial drone or missile attacks in Saudi Arabia” exists, urging U.S. citizens to stay cautious and aware at establishments linked to the United States.
This advisory arrives amid mounting pressure on Saudi Arabia, where Houthi strikes on shipping and energy infrastructure have broken a fragile cease‑fire that had persisted since 2022. Earlier this month the State Department advised travelers to reassess their plans to visit the Kingdom due to Iranian‑backed drones and missiles targeting U.S. assets.
The most recent warning follows a several‑day announcement by the internationally recognized Yemeni government—supporting Saudi Arabia—to launch a counter‑offensive aimed at retaking territory lost to the Houthis since 2014. Last October the Iran‑aligned group launched a coastal assault, gaining a foothold that allowed it to disrupt maritime traffic in the Bab el‑Mandeb Strait, a critical passage linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.
