[TITLE>Supreme Court Hears Petitions on Imran Khan’s Access to Lawyers, Family During Jail Incarceration]
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court commenced hearings on Thursday regarding multiple petitions concerning former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s access to his legal representatives, personal physicians, and family members while detained at Adiala jail.
A three-member bench, led by Justice Mohammad Ali Mazhar, with Justices Musarrat Hilali and Shahid Bilal Hassan, addressed petitions filed by PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja and Dr Uzma Khan, the former premier’s sister.
Raja challenged the October 23, 2025 Islamabad High Court decision that dismissed his contempt petition seeking enforcement of court directives regarding Imran’s legal consultations at Adiala jail.
The bench also considered Dr Uzma’s appeal against an IHC ruling that rejected requests to transfer Imran to Shifa International Hospital, grant access to his personal physicians and family, and provide medical updates to relatives.
Filed through senior counsel Uzair Karamat Bhandari, Dr Uzma’s petition argues that as Imran’s closest relative in the country and a medical doctor, she has direct standing to challenge the judgment due to its impact on his wellbeing. The petition references Supreme Court precedent recognizing the right of aggrieved parties to appeal adverse orders.
The hearings follow Chief Justice Yahya Afridi’s reported assurance to Raja on May 20 that petitions concerning Imran’s access to doctors, family, and legal counsel would be addressed after Eidul Azha.
According to official sources, the contempt petition was listed in accordance with the Supreme Court’s case allocation procedures.
In his constitutional appeal under Article 185, Raja contends that the IHC relied exclusively on the jail superintendent’s oral assurances regarding compliance with prior court directions. Dr Uzma’s petition emphasizes her concern as a physician regarding denied access to Imran’s chosen doctors and family members.
