Former Chelsea winger Scott Sinclair has advised Brazilian forward Estevao Willian to pursue a January loan move after the 19-year-old has managed just 23 minutes of Premier League football this season.
Despite an encouraging debut campaign in England, Estevao has found opportunities scarce under Xabi Alonso. He is yet to start a league match, with established attackers such as Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, and Pedro Neto occupying the forward positions.
The lack of game time has intensified speculation that a temporary departure in the winter window could best serve the player’s development.
Sinclair stresses importance of regular minutes
Sinclair, who spent time on loan six times during his own Stamford Bridge career, told Metro that consistent playing time must take precedence for the young international.
“As a young player, all you want to do is play football,” Sinclair said. “In my experience, having been on loan six times during my spell at Chelsea, you just want to be playing for your parent club. But when you aren’t, you have to go out on loan to gain experience and game time.”
“The longer you go without playing, the less match-fit you become, which makes it even harder to get into the side when an opportunity arises and that leads to doubt. Only Estevao can decide what is best for him, but because he is so young, getting consistent game time is essential and having been in the same position, I’d say he should go and play.”
Chelsea’s official records confirm Estevao has made four substitute appearances in the league this term without a single start. He remained an unused substitute during Saturday’s 2-0 victory at Everton despite being named on the bench.
Such limited involvement is insufficient for a full Brazil international who emerged as one of the club’s brightest attacking prospects last season. However, a permanent exit would be premature; Estevao remains a highly rated talent under long-term contract.
The challenge is not his quality, but whether the current squad depth allows for his proper development. A well-chosen January loan to a side where he would feature regularly could benefit all parties. By prioritising the player’s growth over squad retention, Chelsea could welcome back a far more complete winger next season.
