O’Connell detailed the experience during an interview with Kevin Clark on Clark’s This Is Football podcast, highlighting Scheffler’s unmatched skill and engaging personality during the early-morning practice round.

“It was better than I could imagine,” O’Connell reflected. “The 6:40 a.m. tee time came right after the Open Championship, so Scottie could’ve easily skipped it, but he showed up fully present. He was engaging with everyone, celebrating every good shot, which was every shot for him—but not for the rest of us. It was a blast playing with someone that fun and skilled.”

Scheffler, speaking post-round, praised O’Connell’s coaching acumen and admitted seeking strategic insights from the NFL mentor during their casual exchange.

“You can tell why he’s a great coach—he’s exceptionally sharp,” Scheffler noted. “I asked him a few tactical questions, and he shared some real gems. It was a genuine pleasure spending time with him.”

Scheffler’s golf advice aligned with modern game philosophy, emphasizing aggressive play over cautious restraint. O’Connell, initially hesitant to “play responsible” with hybrid shots, followed Scheffler’s directive on the 3rd hole: “Hit your driver as hard as you can—we’ll track it down!” This bold approach revitalized the coach’s scorecard and enjoyment.

“Watching him adapt was eye-opening,” O’Connell added. “That mindset shift truly transformed my game.” Scheffler, equally impressed, acknowledged O’Connell’s surprising ball-striking prowess despite limited golf time: “As a football coach, you don’t get many chances to play, but he moved it remarkably well and hit some stunning shots.”
