Sean Parker, the Napster co-founder, has re-entered the music industry. Speaking with The Information, he acknowledges he’s now playing by the rules—a shift from his earlier approach of seeking forgiveness over permission, which didn’t yield the desired results the first time around.
Two years ago, Parker joined an $80 million rescue effort for Stability AI, the image-generating startup that nearly collapsed due to overspending and internal turmoil, leading to founder Emad Mostaque’s ouster. Now, alongside longtime friend and CEO Prem Akkaraju, Parker is pulling back the curtain on what they’ve been building.
Parker’s goal is to establish Stability AI as the go-to toolmaker for music professionals. After securing $76 million in funding from Sony, Warner, and Universal—who also licensed their catalogs for training—Stability has released three new audio models and AI music-editing software. The system can generate full instrumental tracks or short snippets from text prompts, and an upcoming update will let users hum a melody or beatbox a drum pattern to steer the output.
