A multi‑storey building in New Delhi, the Indian capital, has collapsed, resulting in at least six fatalities and dozens trapped.

Rescue crews are combing through the debris of the structure, which primarily accommodated students, located near the Delhi University campus in Satya Niketan, on Sunday.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) reported that it treated several victims following the collapse.

AIIMS stated that of the ten patients treated, five were pronounced dead, and a sixth, who remained in critical condition, later died from his injuries.

Teams from India’s National Disaster Response Force, together with police and fire services, used earth‑moving equipment and detection dogs to clear the rubble and search for survivors. A neighboring building was evacuated due to concerns it might also collapse.

According to fire officer Abhilash Malik, up to 40 individuals are still trapped beneath the rubble, and the exact number of survivors and the cause of the collapse have not yet been determined.

A video recorded by a man trapped beneath the debris, as bystanders urged rescuers to assist him, has been circulated online. Additional footage captured residents attempting to rescue victims before official disaster response teams arrived.

“Our top priority is to save the lives of these students,” Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta told local media, adding that rescue operations will continue.

“I assure you we will not spare the guilty,” she added.

“Our condolences go to those who have lost loved ones, and we pray for the swift recovery of the injured. Authorities are on site, providing assistance to those affected by the incident,” the Prime Minister’s office said on X.

Building collapses are common in parts of India during the rainy season from June to September. A comparable incident occurred on Saturday when a three‑storey building in northern India collapsed after heavy rain, though no casualties were reported.

In 2025, at least 11 people died after a residential building collapsed in the northeastern district of New Delhi.
