The A&M BBQ restaurant in Sebastopol, California, is confronting regulatory challenges following a city council decision rejecting proposed zoning changes that would permit outdoor commercial smokers at the establishment.
The restaurant, owned by Kris Austin and recognized by celebrity chef Guy Fieri for its culinary offerings, announced via Facebook that it must cease operations of its outdoor smokers by the end of the week, a move that may reduce its production capacity and menu variety.
The city council voted 6-0 against two zoning amendments on October 6 that could have allowed the business to retain its smokers under specific conditions, including smoke and odor controls. The ruling revives enforcement actions previously paused, with potential fines for noncompliance.
Outdoor commercial barbecues are prohibited in Sebastopol’s Office Commercial district under current zoning laws, though exceptions exist in other commercial zones. The restaurant’s popularity, particularly after Fieri highlighted its confit smoked oxtail at a 2025 food festival, has intensified scrutiny over its operations.
Opened in June 2024, the restaurant recently upgraded its smoking equipment due to increased demand. Neighbor complaints, voiced at a May council meeting, prompted the zoning review. City Manager Mary Gourley confirmed officials issued a warning notice regarding the smokers, with follow-up enforcement scheduled for the end of the week.
Owners explored alternatives, including off-site smoking and a partnership with a local Mexican restaurant, but health department regulations and ongoing disputes complicated solutions. The business is now seeking temporary locations for its smokers, appealing to community supporters for assistance.
Austin and co-owner Finn Liss emphasized efforts to maintain operations while addressing community concerns, urging patrons to anticipate menu adjustments and exercise patience during the transition.
